Luke Kawasaki

Corvallis, Oregon
21 years old

My name is Luke Kawasaki. I was born the small town of Klamath Falls. A town so dull that most people found entertainment by jumping into a toxic lake in the summertime when the heat become unbearable.

I grew up in a single parent house hold, and was raised by my Christian Half Japanese father, and peppered visits from my full Japanese grandfather. My father found out that I was queer when I was around 13 years old, and from then on my life was filled with shame, violence and disappointment.

The town I grew up in was a hostile environment for a young queer child to be growing up in. Frequently I would hear people snicker as I would walk down the hallway, and whispers of “fag” could be heard in the wake behind me. There were multiple example of violence in high school due to my sexuality. I couldn't let that, or anything else stop me from getting out of high school and making my way into college where I could learn the skills to become a social worker.

My life has never been easy, but that doesn't stop me from trying my hardest to make every moment count.
